He is a communication professor at the University of the Philippines Baguio as well as the present Bureau Chief of the Northern Luzon section of the Philippine Daily Inquirer. he said that online Journalism serves as a venue for anyone to publish stories in an inexpensive and more accesible way. However, he emphasized that the training one have undergone in journalism gives you an edge to other bloggers in terms of the treatment and form on how you deliver your story.
Therefore, online journalism complements the and should not be seen as a threat to replace the print media. instead, it serves as a challenge to the journalist to do their functions properly since probably before he/she could post an article, there were plenty of stories that were already posted online. The readers will most probably rely on the most accurate and more credible article to read on. However, in online journalism, one must always check for the accuracy and credibility of the article he/she is working on. The essence of a journalist lies on the impact of his written words. If readers realize the value of the truth from his message, the things even the very least will be signs of change. The meaning of the message that you have put across to the readers mind is what matters most.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE A JOURNALIST

TO BE OR NOT TO BE A JOURNALIST

We are now living in a fast paced competitive world where almost everywhere we go and everything we do involves money. Idealism may be taken over by practicality and the call of necessities may push aside convictions. Even professional Journalists are too vocal of their dissatisfaction with regards to the income they get out of writing. Thus, young individuals who are about to become a journalist are left hanging with the idea on whether to pursue or not a journalism career.

Since we are conducting a thesis on the role of newspaper distributors in Baguio City, we are able to talk to several writers of different publications and they are all saying that the profession is more on a vocation than a livelihood. Mr. Jojo Lamaria, a correspondent of The Daily Tribune said that if you want to work to earn money, you shouldn’t be in the journalism field. He cited to us that they cater their own fares in gathering information for their stories. The events or people they follow are mostly from distant places therefore they have to take public vehicles to be able to reach those. There is also a rule that if your stories haven’t been published or used by the publication, then you will not be paid at all. Moreover, there is a threat in the lives of journalist since being a watch dog; there are instances that we have to inform the public of the dysfunctional roles of agencies and public officials. Thus, a journalist then is subjected not only with financial crisis but also with the threats of their lives.
It is then considered as a dilemma for a young and aspiring journalist like me. My desire though did not decrease but I have learned to accept the sad truth that being a journalist will not guarantee you a good life. We have been informed since our second year college through forums and class discussions that journalism is a profession of vocation but it’s only when I had a face to face encounter with professional writers that I have finally absorb the issue. It is actually a reality check on my part and a challenge at the same time. No wonder why many journalism graduates are not practicing and have opted to grab other jobs that are more beneficial than writing. I’m afraid I will eventually be one of them; maybe I will cross the bridge when I will be there.

Journalist Photos

2006 SONA

2006 SONA

Ilang araw na pinagpuyatan ng ating Pangulo kasama ang ilang kapanalig sa gobyerno ang pinakahihintay ng sambayanang Pilipino. Ang kanyang ika-anim na State of the Nation Address (SONA).
We should be well aware that they should bring about change, they should not be used by any government or political system, and they should be clear, fair, accurate and efficient in delivering news to the public. An ideal media that is. Hence, in reality there is no such thing as perfect or a “very good” media existing. We devote most of our time on entertainment shows and sad to note that advertisers pamper these programs while taking news shows for granted. These then prompts producers to promote such same shows since its business anyway. The public then are hard to educate on this matter. This is evident in the very new news program of ABS-CBN entitled “BANDILA”. It is being aired every 10:30 pm on weekdays. Though it is very informative, it only last for thirty minutes with commercials in between the program each after one report. I wish they have given the program an hour slot to cater for the advertisements without compromising the delivery of the news. It is being anchored by Ces Drilon, Korina Sanchez, and Henry Omega Diaz. All they do in the program is news reading and they do not even interact with their reporters as making a point to question or clarify the reports. Most of the reports are at the early news shows of their network. Probably this is also due to the limited time of the program. I did not see any biases in their way of reporting since they only deliver the information they actually gather. However, not all are that news worthy since almost all their reports cater to Metro Manila. Moreover, the three anchors of the show could only talk at least twice in the whole duration of the program. Maybe it’s a strategy on their part to put together the three personalities in a show but it is more like impractical since even one reporter could do the job anyway for a thirty minute slot. The show is still starting anyway; probably they could still make some adjustments. I think since it is a late night news show, it should be given more improvements so it will be appealing to the public.

BOB GARONS ARTICLE

BOB GARONS ARTICLE

I was actually moved by this online article I have read by Bob Garon. His very words soothed my soul that during my time of being in the identity crisis stage, I have his writings as a guide. He said that “good intention without action is no good”. He is right in saying that we are not judged by our intentions but by our actions. A thousand of words will never equal to a one good act. Sometimes we have the tendency to be persuaded by the bright idea of some one talking. We tend to believe the speaker will really succeed with all the glamour the way in which he delivered his talk and that we give less important on the emphasis on how he is going to do it in the first place. We believe that being a good speaker follows being an intelligent person and successful when in fact it is not necessarily the case all the time. For in the million intentions that were spoken only very little results might come out in the end. The author said that “successful people do it and then talk about it”. Every one of us have a goal in mind that we wanted to pursue, a dream that is a sort of intention we wanted to grab. These however are supposed to serve only as our driving force to move in order to achieve greater success. An action indeed is truly the key in getting to greater heights in life.

THE THINKER MR.CAMUS

Albert Camus, a philosopher once said that “life is absurd, life is meaningless”. After my encounter with the writings of this thinker, I can not help but wonder why Albert Camus came up with such a conclusion. Well, he is said to be an atheist and rejects the idea of God’s existence. In plain language, he bears no faith, a deviant that is. He went against the prevailing norms of the society, a society of believers but only few were true followers. A bundle of question bothers me. The more I try to get rid of them, the more they penetrate into the depths of my spirit and challenge me to find the logic in Camus’ belief. His belief that man reaps no joy after all his suffering is quite confusing. I have tried to reminisce the past years of my own life. I have been battling my own fears for so long. Living was not too easy for me. There are many times when I heard my self cry out of defeat and desperation because life became too unfair for me in some instances. There I get to consider maybe Camus was right, but just maybe…
But come to philosophized further, I realized that despite of life absurdities, I lived. Some people give me a pat on my shoulder when I needed it most. Some people love me back though I did not expect them to. Blessings are pouring though I am not asking for it. Amidst the pain, life is becoming better.
I pity Albert Camus some how. He failed to transform a disappointing view of life into a fascinating scenario which led him to conclude that life is absurd, that life overflows with sufferings and pains. Although life is full of absurdities, it is still a choice. It is what we make out of it that determines what we will become. Every single day we are caught up with making decisions and from these little decisions our lives are being shape through time. Bottom point is that, when your heart is full of hatred and you have no faith at all, then life is most likely to become absurd.

Reading vs. writing

If I will be given an option between reading a piece of literature and watching it on screen, I would gladly choose reading. Probably the voracious readers and book lovers out there would agree with me. Reading may take longer and it can be a more demanding task but it has huge advantages over just plain watching. To those who were moved by the novels of Nicholas Sparks, Tom Clancy and Dan Brown which were all bestselling; I am sure you would agree with me with my claim that the onscreen version of these pieces of works are not satisfiable as compared to reading the full detail on the book. I have read this guide book by Kate Keenan and she has a lot to say about the good points of reading. She insist that when people read a document, their overall goal is to find out what it contains and understand its content. She also emphasize that reading involves making a selective search for information using existing knowledge. She furthermore added that using space, headings, paragraphs and indentions are effective substitutes for visual and vocal signs as to what the television offers. Indeed, I could say that the authors I have mentioned were able to present their works with full consideration of their reader demands. I would also say that by making what you write as simple and approachable, you keep the reader’s interest, and leave him or her with the impression that what you wrote was worth reading. That piece will probably be read a hundred times.
